We all want our work to reach the widest readership possible – you are only going to effect change if you can spread your message to as many people as you can.
This is where linguistic knowledge and cultural sensitivity come in. It’s not just a matter of engaging the most experienced translators in your field. It’s also about creating designs that will work across multiple languages, cultures and religions.
At COMPRESS.dsl we have been doing exactly that for 20 years.
Last month we produced two more versions of the African Union’s Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) for the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, in Wolof and in Lingala. This is in addition to the 8 versions we have designed previously – and there are more in the pipeline.
We have also been working on a new operational guidance note for APCOF and the AU, which we are translating into Arabic, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili.
Trained MHPSS professionals from the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation headed off to Juba in South Sudan earlier this month. They launched a training manual on youth-centred capacity building on mental health and psychosocial support and the AUTJP – in English and French.
Finally, Afrobarometer’s annual report for 2025 was also launched last week. We designed and produced versions of this in English and French. Afrobarometer is a pan-African, nonpartisan survey research network that provides reliable data on African experiences and evaluations of democracy, governance and quality of life. Its work is guided by a vision of a world in which Africa’s development is anchored in the realities and aspirations of its people.
