Newsletter 13_The youth of today …!
Hellooooo there, June is Youth Month
In South Africa, the month of June is dedicated to the youth of 1976, who stood up against the apartheid government and fought for freedom and the right to equal education. Even though young people can be challenging at times – and I know it, I have four of them – they do have a point when they claim that the older generation, and its politicians, continue to let them down. Pink’s song, What about us? is an excellent reminder of what a mess we are leaving behind for our children, be it in terms of education, political structures, economic systems … or the environment.
A new foundation taking on the climate challenge
We are unbelievably proud to have worked with The African Climate Foundation on their Strategic Framework 2021–2025. The ACF is the first African-led strategic climate change grant-making foundation on the continent. Building on the success of partner organisations like the European Climate Foundation and ClimateWorks Foundation, the ACF was established to provide a mechanism through which philanthropies can contribute to Africa’s efforts to address climate change. As an African-led and African-based foundation, the ACF is committed to supporting African solutions to the climate change challenges facing the continent.
The African Climate Foundation’s Strategic Framework is the outcome of extensive research and engagement undertaken by their team over the course of a year. It has been informed and shaped by the knowledge and experience of a network of African scholars, practitioners, decision makers and activists of which the ACF is a part. The Framework has been designed as a living document: while it captures the ACF’s current thinking and approach to climate change and development in Africa, it is expected to evolve over time. The Framework has also been designed as a directional document: it provides an overview of the ACF’s theoretical framing, body of work, objectives and approach to delivering impact.
Climate change interventions have immense potential to unlock new development pathways on the African continent. To realise this potential, climate change needs to be brought to the forefront of development thinking and planning in Africa. Carving out new pathways – at the nexus of climate change and development – also creates a unique opportunity for African countries to redefine what we mean by development, what we prioritise in our developmental agendas, and how we measure progress towards it.
